Specialties

1866 consultations

221 surgeries

2143 exams

13 training sessions

During the missions, several hearing evaluation tests are conducted.

The otholaryngology team has detected an abnormal number of bilateral deaf children in Sao Tome and Principe, which leads to development delays and impairments, namely inability to go to school. Many of these deaf children where deaf from birth and consequently hadn’t developed oral language. The medical team started to integrate a speech therapist that went to Sao Tome and Principe every three months.

This was the beginning of the sign language medical specialty within the Health for All: Integrated Programme and the early inception of the Without Barriers project.
